Wakaf Mozaik Masjid Indonesia

In winter 2021, a meeting was held between IIC administrators and Ambassador Desra Percaya at the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) to discuss the progress of the Indonesian mosque project in London. During the discussion, Mr. Desra proposed an innovative fundraising idea: selling commemorative tiles, similar to what Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium has implemented.

A special team was then formed, coordinated by Gatot Subroto, a doctoral student at University College London and former Chair of PPI UK (2020–2021). Gatot drafted a business plan and conducted a comparative study of the East London Mosque, which had already implemented a similar waqf tile strategy. He then formed the Waqf Mosaic Committee consisting of 8 students.

Launching

The grand launching took place on 9 January 2022, in the format of a Qur’an study event and product launch, held online via Zoom due to still on going COVID restriction and in order to reach wider audience. the objective was to inform the public, explain to prospective buyers, and commence product sales.

The target of WAKAF MOZAIK MASJID INDONESIA is to raise the remaining funds for the construction/acquisition of the Indonesian Mosque in London (around GBP 600,000 as of December 2021). In line with the property acquisition process, new sources of funds are urgently needed to close the gap within a limited timeframe.

WAKAF MOZAIK MASJID INDONESIA were offered in three types:
a. Small package: 100 units @ £1,000 per tile (est. £100,000)
b. Medium package: 20 units @ £5,000 per tile (est. £100,000)
c. Large package: 5 units @ £50,000 (est. £250,000)

With this pricing strategy, the product’s reach was expected to be wide, covering individuals, groups, or institutions from various backgrounds and economic capacities.

Every waqf transaction will include:
a. A receipt for the waqf contribution
b. A waqf certificate (serving as the official declaration of waqf)
c. A plaque displayed on the mosque building as an appreciation to the waqif

Although these plaques are not intended as compensation for the waqf, they will be provided differently for each package type. The plaques, featuring the names of waqif, will be placed on the outer wall of the main prayer hall, such as along the entrance corridor, not on the front or side walls of the prayer area, so they are not in the direct view of worshippers.

Performance Report

In total, Wakaf Mosaic successfully sold:

  • 161 small units

Further fund-raising was also added by auctioning a custom Brompton bike that was signed by the company’s CEO, Will Butler-Adams, which also included a factory tour for the winner. The auction was held in February 2022 in collaboration with The Jakarta Post and Human Aid Initiative. You can read more about it here.

These fund including with the fund gained from selling the old premises and further fund-raising through KitaBisa enabled us to buy a property at Clifford Way, Neasden, London NW10 1AN. Which makes it the first Indonesia Masjid/Islamic Centre in the UK, alhamdulillah.

Watch the minutes we entered the premises on our Youtube channel.

A temporary Mozaik has been placed along the staircase to the second floor of the newly acquired building. While it is not yet made up of individual tiles, it stands as a symbol of unity and collective effort from Indonesian Muslims in the UK and across the world.

And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.”
(QS. Al-Ankabut: 69).
